Mercedes Formula One Team Principal Toto Wolff dismissed suggestions that his team has favored driver Kimi Antonelli over teammate George Russell, calling such claims completely nonsensical and labeling those who believe them brainless.
Toto Wolff Responds to Favouritism Rumours at Singapore Grand Prix
Antonelli currently leads the Drivers’ Championship by 84 points, a margin that widened after Russell suffered a power unit failure in Malaysia, marking his third retirement of the year. The Italian driver’s strong performance following a difficult rookie season has led some observers and fans to question team decisions.
Addressing the criticism during the official FIA team principals’ press conference in Singapore, Wolff defended the integrity of the Brackley-based outfit.
They’re brainless, whoever thinks that… I mean, it’s completely nonsensical. We’ve had it in the past with Lewis fans. I mean, literally, I don’t know what’s going on. Do they think I have a button that says, ‘George engine failure now’? Or disadvantaging one driver against the other when we are fighting for a constructors’ championship? When we have always had the mindset of providing everybody equal material?

Wolff added that while he finds some online abuse amusing—noting he has been referred to online as Satan—he has zero respect for unfounded accusations.

Car Specifications and Equal Opportunities at Mercedes
To counter claims of preferential treatment, Mercedes elected to split car specifications for the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.
Wolff explained that evaluating different specifications helps the team gather data rather than serving a political agenda.
Since it remains unclear which option will prove faster, a choice must be made to discover the answer. There is no great political thinking behind it. And when it comes to racing, like [McLaren’s] papaya rules, we have always been very clear that we’re not standing in each other’s way.
