Tottenham Appeals Rodrigo Bentancur’s Seven-Game Ban for Controversial Comments
Tottenham Hotspur Appeals Bentancur’s Seven-Game Ban
Tottenham Hotspur has appealed the seven-game ban issued to player Rodrigo Bentancur. This suspension arose after he made comments about teammate Son Heung-min that were deemed insulting. Bentancur remains suspended during the appeal process, missing an upcoming match against Manchester City.
The ban and a £100,000 fine resulted from an independent commission’s finding. Bentancur’s remarks referenced Son’s ethnic background, specifically saying, “Sonny, or one of Sonny’s cousins, as they all look more or less the same,” during a TV interview in June.
Tottenham accepted the finding of guilt but is contesting the severity of the punishment, believing the sanction is excessive. A club statement confirmed the appeal’s submission but noted no further comments would be made during this time.
The Football Association’s guidelines set a minimum six-game ban for discriminatory language. However, the commission assessed Bentancur’s conduct as more serious than the minimum but not as severe as others could be. Factors influencing the decision included Bentancur’s status as a high-profile player and the potential wide reach of his comments.
If the appeal leads to a reduction from seven to six games, Bentancur could return for a match against Liverpool on December 22.
