The return of both defenders provides relief for manager Roberto De Zerbi following an abject 3-0 defeat against Brentford in the opening Premier League match of the season. Van de Ven missed the entirety of pre-season after returning from international duty with the Netherlands at the World Cup and sat out the Brentford fixture due to what De Zerbi described as not a big problem. Porro similarly required time to build up his fitness following a break after Spain’s triumph in North America earlier in the summer. According to manager Roberto De Zerbi, both players will feature among the substitutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Van de Ven comes on to the bench, and Pedro Porro comes on to the bench, De Zerbi stated during his pre-match press conference.

Squad Updates and New Signings for Charlton Clash

Alongside the returning defensive duo, new signing Savio is in contention to make his debut. De Zerbi remained cautious regarding the forward’s immediate readiness, stating he did not yet know if everything is good for the new arrival to play. Dominic Solanke is in line to start up front against Charlton after dealing with his own injury issues and limited pre-season minutes. Solanke made a substitute appearance off the bench during the loss to Brentford. Meanwhile, young prospect Luca Williams-Barnett will also be named among the substitutes. However, Tottenham’s squad remains affected by several ongoing fitness concerns. James Maddison sustained a small injury in his shoulder during a second-half appearance against Brentford, adding to the absences of Mohammed Kudus, who is not yet ready to play following a long-term quad injury, and Dejan Kulusevski, who remains sidelined by a patella injury sustained in May 2025. Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons are also long-term absentees.
