Table of Contents
Tottenham’s Champions league campaign got off to a brutal start with a 4-0 defeat away to Bayern munich. While the scoreline tells a harsh story, individual performances varied significantly.Let’s dive into how each Spurs player fared in Germany, with ratings out of 10.
Goalkeeper & defense
Guglielmo Vicario – 6/10 – It’s tough to fault a goalkeeper when the defence in front of him is consistently exposed. Vicario made a few decent saves, but ultimately couldn’t prevent the certain onslaught. He’ll be disappointed with the goals conceded, but wasn’t solely to blame.
pedro Porro – 5/10 - A challenging night for the Spaniard. He struggled to contain the constant threat of Alphonso Davies and Leroy Sané, offering little going forward. He was often caught out of position, leaving space for Bayern to exploit.
Cristian Romero - 6/10 – Romero, as always, was committed and aggressive. However, even his tenacity couldn’t stem the tide. He made a few crucial tackles, but the sheer pressure from Bayern’s attack proved too much.
Ben Davies – 5/10 – Davies had a torrid time dealing with Harry Kane’s movement and physicality. He looked uncomfortable throughout the match and struggled to provide any defensive stability. His passing was also noticeably off.
Destiny Udogie – 6/10 – Udogie was one of the few Tottenham players who can hold his head high. He showed good energy and willingness to get forward, and even provided some much-needed defensive cover. He stepped up in that regard, often helping Porro with Luiz Diaz.
Midfield
Pape Matar Sarr – 6/10 – The quality of the opponent meant that Sarr’s influence was greatly reduced in the ten position. The midfielder barely had an impact in the final third. He worked hard, but couldn’t dictate play against Bayern’s dominant midfield.
Oliver Skipp – 5/10 – Skipp was overrun in midfield, struggling to cope with the pace and intensity of Bayern’s passing. He offered little in possession and failed to provide adequate protection to the defence.Brennan Johnson - 5/10 – The welshman, just like Kudus, had to help out defensively on the left, as he occupies Heung-min Son’s position. He offered little threat in the final third and looked largely ineffective.
Attack
James Maddison - 6/10 – Maddison showed flashes of his quality with some neat footwork and incisive passes, but he was largely isolated and unable to influence the game. Bayern’s midfield dominance stifled his creativity.
Richarlison – 5/10 – Chances were few and far between for the Brazilian as Tottenham struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities. He managed a shot from range, but it lacked the power to beat Neuer. A goal is desperately needed to boost his confidence.
Ivan Perišić – 5/10 – Perišić struggled to make an impact on the right wing. He was largely ineffective against Bayern’s defence and offered little in the way of creativity or threat.
This was a tough night for Tottenham, and a harsh lesson in the quality they need to reach if they want to compete at the highest level. While some players showed glimpses of promise, the overall performance was well below par.
