Touchdown for Tech: NFL and Amazon Web Services Unleash the Future of Football
NFL Media Boosts Productivity with Generative AI Tools
The National Football League (NFL) has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to introduce Next Gen Stats, a cutting-edge platform that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze tackles in American football. The new feature, “Tackle Probability,” uses machine learning to predict the likelihood of a specific defender making a tackle at any given moment during play.
Powered by AWS cloud services, the Next Gen Stats platform collects over 500 million data points each season, providing a vast amount of data that drives innovation within the NFL. This data is used to improve fan engagement through advanced statistics, create new viewing experiences through video, and develop new ways to communicate the action on the field. Additionally, data-driven insights are helping the NFL improve player safety and add excitement to games through rule changes, such as the new Dynamic Kickoff.
The introduction of generative AI is a key element of this expanded partnership, aimed at improving productivity and creating added value for both the NFL and NFL fans. Gary Brantley, NFL Chief Information Officer, stated, “By leveraging data and advanced technologies like generative AI, we’re accelerating innovation in key areas like player safety, fan engagement, and content creation.”
NFL Media is utilizing Amazon Q Business, AWS’ enterprise AI assistant, to get answers to questions about a wide range of business information and content creation topics. They have also launched a self-service offering that provides fast, detailed answers to common technical and operational questions. Additionally, they used Amazon Bedrock to build a search tool that uses generative AI to enable content production teams to search the NFL’s Next Gen Stats database for footage and analysis of specific plays using natural language prompts.
Through these initiatives, the NFL is helping employees be more productive and focus their efforts on creating high-quality content for NFL Media properties, including NFL Network, NFL Films, NFL.com, the NFL App, and NFL social media channels. Julie Souza, Head of Global Sports at AWS, said, “The NFL and AWS share a passion for innovation, and we are excited to continue to drive progress across the NFL ecosystem.”
