PGA Tour Revamps Tour Championship format for 2025 Season

updated May 29, 2025
‍

The‌ PGA Tour is ⁢set to introduce meaningful changes to the tour Championship format in 2025, ⁤aiming ‍to boost competition and fan engagement. The updated format will assign starting strokes based on player ranking, with ⁣the leading player beginning at 10-under par.

the player in second place will start at 8-under, third at 7-under, fourth at 6-under,⁣ and fifth at 5-under. The remaining 25 ⁢players will⁤ be divided into groups‍ of five, receiving their starting ⁣scores according to their rank.

Along with the adjusted strokes, the PGA Tour ⁢plans a⁣ new course setup designed⁤ to encourage more “risk/reward moments.” Officials are also evaluating the qualification ⁣system for future enhancements to ⁢the FedEx Cup.

scottie Scheffler, the ‍world number one, previously described the FedEx Cup’s play-off format as ‌”silly.” Scheffler won the Tour championship last year, finishing four shots ahead of Colin Morikawa.

Shifting the Tour Championship to a more ‍straight-up⁣ format with a tougher course set-up‍ makes it easier for fans to follow and provides a more challenging test for players, which brings out the best competition.

Jay monahan, PGA Tour commissioner, emphasized the goal of delivering ⁤the ⁢most competitive golf with ⁢the highest ‍stakes in‌ an engaging format.

The Player‌ Advisory Council ‍lead a thorough process to⁢ respond to what our fans are ⁣asking ⁤for: the most competitive golf in the world, played for the highest stakes, in the ⁢most⁢ straightforward and engaging format.
