A Grueling Climb and a Shifting Landscape

Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, the reigning champion of the Tour de France Femmes, found herself in a familiar position at the front of the peloton, yet the outcome of this year’s race presented a new challenge. While she maintained a consistent presence throughout the week, her strategy of conserving energy for the high mountains didn’t yield the double victory she had aimed for. The recent stage, particularly the ascent of the Col de la Madeleine, proved to be a pivotal moment.

“Best Effort of My Life” Not Enough for Yellow

Despite the disappointment of not securing the yellow jersey, and with the possibility of a podium finish still uncertain depending on the final stages, Niewiadoma-Phinney expressed a sense of pride in her performance. “Personally, I don’t feel great as that is not the result that I worked hard for, but simultaneously occurring, looking at the climb and the numbers, it was the best effort of my life,” she shared at the finish line. This sentiment underscores a broader observation about the evolving nature of women’s cycling. Niewiadoma-Phinney highlighted the increasing depth and quality within the peloton, noting, “The fact that other riders improved so much shows how the women’s peloton is growing, and it makes me wonder what else we can be doing to win the races when simple improvement is not enough anymore.” This reflects a positive, albeit challenging, trend for the sport.

GC Battle Far From Over

The current standings place Niewiadoma-Phinney 22 seconds behind leader Vollering and 1 minute and 3 seconds behind Gigante. This narrow gap suggests that the general classification (GC) battle could still offer significant drama on the final day, even if the overall victory seems out of reach.

Adding to the intrigue, fifth-placed Cédrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly), who finished sixth on the stage, is also within striking distance of the podium, sitting just 1 minute and 34 seconds behind Gigante. With one day remaining, the Tour de France Femmes is far from decided, promising an exciting conclusion to what has already been a compelling race. The decisive moments, however, appear to have been forged on the slopes of the Madeleine.
