Lizzie Deignan Headlines Women’s Tour of Britain Cycling Race
Lizzie Deignan, a prominent figure in British cycling, will compete in the Lloyds Women’s Tour of Britain this June. the race, spanning four stages across England and Scotland from June 5-8, will also feature her Lidl-Trek teammate Anna Henderson, an Olympic silver medalist.
Adding to the excitement, rising British cycling prospects Cat Ferguson of Movistar and Imogen Wolff, representing Visma-Lease a Bike, are set to participate in the Women’s cycling event. Sisters Elynor and Zoe backstedt will also compete, riding for UAE-Team ADQ and Canyon-Sram Zondacrypto, respectively.
Deignan, 36, plans to retire at the season’s end, concluding a celebrated career that includes two previous Tour of Britain Women victories, the inaugural paris-Roubaix title in 2021, and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.The UCI World Tour race will showcase world-class riders, including Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes, across stages in northeast England and Scotland, concluding in Glasgow. “I have such special memories from this race and over my career I have had a lot of success here,” said Deignan, who won in 2016 and 2019. “This will be my final Tour of Britain so it will be bittersweet but I am going to be surrounded by some incredible women.”
British Cycling rescued the Tour of Britain Women after its cancellation in 2023 due to funding challenges. The race distinguishes itself by offering equal prize money to the men’s event, relative to the number of stages. In comparison,the Tour de France Femmes,women’s cycling’s premier race,awards its winner 10% of the men’s event prize,amounting to 50,000 Euros.
