new Zealander Ally Wollaston captured the Tour of Britain Women title, narrowly defeating British cyclist Cat Ferguson.Wollaston, riding for FDJ-Suez, started the final stage in Glasgow three seconds behind Ferguson but executed a strategic plan to seize the overall lead.
The key to Wollaston’s victory was her dominance in the intermediate sprints. She won all three, earning valuable bonus seconds that allowed her to draw level with the 19-year-old Ferguson. Further securing her lead, Wollaston finished third in the stage behind lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kool, adding four more bonus seconds to her total.
Ultimately, Wollaston beat Movistar’s Ferguson by four seconds in the general classification. Karlijn Swinkels of UAE Team ADQ finished third overall.
“I’m a little bit overwhelmed – sorry. I’m so happy, first of all.A massive ‘thank you’ to my team-mates, I couldn’t have done it without them,” Wollaston said. “This means the world to me – it’s my first World Tour victory in GC [general classification].”
Wollaston acknowledged the difficulty of the race, especially with Ferguson consistently challenging her. “I knew I needed to get every second I could in the bonus sprints, and unluckily Cat was right in my wheel every time,” Wollaston said.
The final sprint proved decisive. “There was a moment of doubt halfway thru that last lap were I thought ‘I just cannot do this today’,” Wollaston admitted. “My team-mates really helped me pull it together and pulled me to the front for the final.”
Wiebes won the final stage,launching her attack with 300 meters to go. kool followed in second, with Wollaston’s third-place finish enough to secure the overall Tour of Britain Women title.Ally wollaston‘s FDJ-Suez team also claimed the team classification victory. Ferguson, despite missing out on the overall win, secured the red points jersey, capping off an remarkable performance in the women’s cycling event.
