As regional tensions involving Iran and Israel rise, Egypt is actively bolstering its economic defenses, with a particular focus on tourism and entrepreneurship. These sectors are considered vital to the nation’s economy.
the Egyptian government, led by the prime minister, has formed a “crisis committee” to address the escalating situation. However, officials recognize the need to safeguard the economy, especially the tourism sector, which employs over 2.4 million Egyptians and contributes about 12% to the contry’s gross domestic product.
Egypt’s tourism ecosystem extends beyond luxury hotels and ancient sites. It relies heavily on small and micro-enterprises, including tour guides, family-run guesthouses, local artisans, and digital service providers.
To support these businesses, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Advancement and International Cooperation launched the “Hafez” platform. This digital gateway offers more than 90 financial and technical services from 44 international institutions.Over 18,000 entrepreneurs are already using Hafez to access financing, mentorship, and markets.
The effectiveness of Hafez hinges on its ability to reach young entrepreneurs throughout Egypt, empower community-based tourism, and unlock the potential of lesser-known destinations, from Sohag to Nuweiba.
Recent partnerships between the government and business councils, including the Federation of Egyptian Industries and the Young Businessmen’s Association, are a step in the right direction. these collaborations need to be reinforced with grants, credit lines, mentorship, and promotional strategies tailored for crisis situations.
Egypt aims to foster confidence in its people, recognizing them as active participants in building resilience and driving recovery.
What’s next
Egypt will continue to expand the Hafez platform and strengthen partnerships to support tourism and entrepreneurship, ensuring economic stability during uncertain times.
