Tours Volley-Ball: Coupe de France Dream Ends in Nice Defeat

Tours Volley-Ball: Coupe de France Dream Ends in Nice Defeat

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Tours – Nice: 2-3

The upset. The major shock. Tours Volley-Ball will not be playing in another Coupe de France final. Despite a draw that appeared to have opened favorably, and despite the strong desire of Tours supporters to face Paris again, Nice had other plans.

The shock reverberated through Salle Grenon. The faces of the Tours players after the final point – a Nice block on Nik Mujanovic that fell lifelessly to the court – spoke volumes. Some quickly retreated to the locker room, while others remained slumped on the bench as Nice celebrated their qualification for the final, where Paris Volley awaits on March 28th.

An Expensive Week

The disappointment was immeasurable, a crushing blow to a major club objective. It comes just six days after Tours were eliminated from the CEV Cup against Ljubljana, compounding the frustration. The team now faces a March schedule with limited competitive stakes, the upcoming weekend feeling particularly hollow.

But such is the nature of competition. The Niçois fully earned their place in the final, having been down two sets to zero, facing elimination at 23-23 in the third set, and ultimately finding a way to elevate their game to an irresistible level. In volleyball, as in many sports, heart and determination can overcome fundamental advantages, especially in a match with a final berth on the line.

Nice’s victory marks a significant milestone, ending a ten-year drought against Tours, a team they hadn’t defeated since 2016. The win at Salle Grenon was also a first in club history, adding to the magnitude of the achievement. This semifinal triumph was a testament to their resilience and tactical adjustments, particularly the impact of Titouan Hallé stepping in for Liberman.

The match unfolded as a dramatic reversal of fortune. Tours initially appeared to be in control, taking the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and 26-24. However, Nice refused to yield, battling back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-17, and 15-13. The comeback was fueled by a collective effort, with each player contributing significantly.

Mujanovic led Tours with a remarkable 37 points, demonstrating impressive attacking prowess (57% attack success rate) and contributing three blocks. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Nice’s overall performance, particularly their strong blocking game. Dawid Dulski was a key performer for Nice, scoring 25 points with 43% attack success, two aces, and three blocks. Crucially, Nice outblocked Tours 15 to 8, a decisive factor in the outcome.

This Coupe de France run represents a remarkable journey for Nice, reaching their second final in club history. Their previous appearance was in 2023, also in Paris, where they lost to Tours in straight sets. They will now have a chance to avenge that defeat and claim their first Coupe de France title.

The final on March 28th promises to be a compelling contest between Nice, and Paris. Paris advanced to the final after defeating Chaumont 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 28-26, 21-25, 15-13) in a similarly tight match. The contrast in styles and the stakes involved will undoubtedly make for a thrilling spectacle.

For Tours, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow. They entered the competition as strong favorites, boasting a 28-game winning streak prior to Tuesday’s match. The defeat underscores the unpredictable nature of volleyball and the importance of maintaining composure and execution under pressure. The team will need to regroup and refocus as they navigate the remainder of the season.

The upset victory by Nice serves as a reminder that in knockout competitions, anything can happen. Their resilience, tactical adjustments, and unwavering determination propelled them to a stunning victory, setting the stage for an exciting Coupe de France final against Paris.
