Toxic Dog Treats Found at San Jose Park

A dog owner in San Jose discovered dozens of dog treats scattered at a local park that she reported smelling like insecticide spray, raising concerns about potential toxicity to pets.

Michelle Nguyen was walking with her husband, toddler and two dogs at Berryessa Creek Park on Saturday, April 5, 2026, when she encountered a suspicious pile of Milk Bones on the ground. Nguyen noted that one of her dogs began lunging for the items, which she described as unusual behavior.

Using a waste bag to collect the treats, Nguyen stated that the items smelled like Raid spray. As she continued walking, she discovered more treats and eventually found an empty container of Milk Bones located behind a tree. Nguyen reported that the glove she used to pick up the treats absolutely reeked and caused her to develop a headache.

Official Response and Veterinary Advice

City of San Jose Animal Care and Services confirmed they collected the treats from Nguyen to ensure they were disposed of properly. The agency stated that the exact nature of the treats remains unknown.

Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage the public to remain mindful when visiting parks and other public spaces, and to avoid allowing pets to consume unknown items or treats found on the ground.

Veterinarian Dr. Tal Solomon indicated that he has encountered similar cases in the past. He advised pet owners to stay away from such treats entirely and to pull their dogs away from any unknown food items found in public areas.
