Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is officially in the works, with Woody and Buzz Lightyear set to return. Despite the seemingly conclusive ending of the previous film, Disney confirmed another sequel. as the release date nears, details about the plot and characters are emerging, suggesting a story that resonates with today’s tech-savvy kids and their parents.
Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Woody, who is drawn back into the fold by Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack. Jessie seeks Woody’s help to confront challenges posed by a new,modern villain. Tim Allen, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, indicated that while the film focuses on Jessie, Buzz and Woody will reunite.
According to Pixar’s Pete Docter, Toy Story 5 explores the dynamic between toys and technology. Bonnie, now eight, finds her attention increasingly drawn to electronics. The antagonist is Lily Pad, a frog-shaped tablet that Bonnie uses to socialize and play games. Lily Pad believes that Bonnie should move beyond toys, creating conflict.
jessie, now the leader of Bonnie’s toys, believes Woody’s experience is crucial to competing with the allure of the internet. Though, Docter hinted at potential friction, noting that Woody and Buzz may not always see eye to eye after their time apart.

A brief clip shown at D23 in August 2024 featured Woody, Jessie, and Buzz, but contained no dialog.
Previews have revealed an opening sequence where Buzz Lightyear awakens on a beach surrounded by other Buzz toys from a crashed shipping container. Together, they build a fire, remember their allegiance to Star Command, construct rafts, and set sail.
Andrew Stanton, a veteran of the Toy Story franchise, and Elemental producer McKenna Harris will co-direct, with Stanton penning the script.
Toy story 5 is slated for release on June 19, 2026.
