Toyota Motor Corporation has officially reintroduced the FJ nameplate to its global lineup with the world premiere of the new Land Cruiser FJ. Unveiled on October 20, 2025, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the vehicle is positioned as a compact off-roader designed to balance modern technology with a tool-first philosophy.

The Land Cruiser FJ is intended to expand the existing Land Cruiser family, which currently consists of the flagship 300 Series Station Wagon, the heavy-duty 70 Series workhorse, and the 250 Series, which was introduced in 2024 as a return to the vehicle’s origins.

Strategic Market Positioning and Launch

Toyota has planned the Japan launch for the new Land Cruiser FJ around mid-2026. The vehicle is designed to provide Freedom &amp. Joy by allowing owners to enjoy the Land Cruiser experience in their own way while maintaining the reliability and durability associated with the brand.

Strategic Market Positioning and Launch

The move addresses a significant gap in the market left by the discontinuation of the original FJ Cruiser in North America in 2014. The original model had established a cult following by blending retro styling with trail capability, and the new 2026 model seeks to recapture that appeal for both everyday owners and hardcore off-road enthusiasts.

Technical Specifications and Design

The 2026 Land Cruiser FJ departs from the larger dimensions of the flagship Land Cruiser models. It is built on the IMV-0 platform, a modular ladder-frame chassis that results in a shorter vehicle, measuring approximately 4.5 meters. This compact size is intended to make the vehicle more suitable for narrow trails and urban environments.

Key design and mechanical features include:

  • A robust exterior with functional items that embody the signature Land Cruiser aesthetic.
  • A pivot toward a Tool-First philosophy, combining analog hardware sensibilities with a digital spine.
  • Off-road performance capabilities intended to mirror the utility of the original Land Cruiser lineage.

Historical Context and Brand Heritage

The development of the FJ is rooted in the history of the Land Cruiser, which began with the Toyota BJ in 1951. The brand’s heritage is further linked to the FJ40 Land Cruiser, produced between 1960 and 1984, which was known for its durability in harsh environments like the Australian Outback.

Toyota’s Land Cruiser series has achieved cumulative sales of approximately 12.15 million units across more than 190 countries and regions over the last 70 years. The new FJ model leverages this global reputation for reliability and durability to attract a new generation of buyers.

By transitioning the FJ from a concept to a production-ready reality, Toyota is targeting a segment of the market that values mechanical DNA and retro hardware, while still requiring the safety and security of a modern vehicle.
