Indonesia Car Sales Dip in March; BYD Sees significant Growth

JAKARTA (April 18, 2025) – Indonesian car sales experienced a downturn in March compared to February, even though certain brands, most notably BYD, bucked the trend with considerable sales increases.
Overall Sales Figures
According to data released by the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (gaikindo), wholesale car sales (distribution from factories to dealers) reached 70,892 units in March, a decrease from the 72,336 units sold the previous month. Retail sales,however,saw a 9.6% increase, climbing from 69,872 units to 76,582 units.
Despite the increase in retail sales, the cumulative figures for the first quarter of 2025 indicate an overall market contraction compared to the same period last year.

Market Leaders
Toyota continues to dominate the Indonesian automotive market. In March, Toyota recorded wholesale sales of 22,476 units, a decrease of 1,921 units from February. Retail sales for Toyota reached 24,614 units, a 10.3% increase from the previous month.
Daihatsu secured the second-place position with wholesale sales of 13,057 units, an increase from the 11,959 units sold in February. Retail sales for Daihatsu totaled 13,111 units,a 4.9% increase.
honda rounded out the top three best-selling brands. Wholesale sales for Honda reached 6,303 units, a 28% decrease from the previous month. However, retail sales saw an increase of 5.3%, with 8,165 units distributed in March.
BYD’s Remarkable surge
BYD, the Chinese electric car manufacturer, experienced a remarkable surge in sales, with a 129.1% increase in March. Wholesale sales for BYD reached 3,205 units, compared to 1,399 units the previous month. Retail sales also saw significant growth, with 2,870 units sold, an increase of 1,382 units compared to February.
Aion also posted significant gains, with wholesale sales increasing by 503.1%, from 159 units in February to 959 units in March, marking it as one of the fastest-growing brands in the electric vehicle segment.
Economic Factors
Yohannes Nangoi, Chairperson of Gaikindo, attributed the overall market decline to prevailing economic challenges faced by indonesians.
