Tractors Banned: Farmers’ Anger and Government Response
Despite attempts to address farmer discontent initiated by Sébastien Lecornu, the government has intensified the situation. The catalyst? Not only were meetings held at Matignon unsuccessful, but several prefectures also decided to prohibit the movement of tractor convoys and agricultural machinery on major roads until Thursday, January 8. This decision coincided with a renewed call to mobilize this week, issued by various unions, including the Peasant Confederation, Rural Coordination (CR), and FNSEA.
“We will go up [to Paris]” and bring farmers’ “grievances” with us,even “if half have to end up in police custody,” stated Bertrand Venteau, president of the CR,following his meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday. Convoys departed on Tuesday from Dordogne, Landes, Gironde, Corsica, and Lot-et-Garonne.
