hundreds of farmers, led by the National Federation of Farmers’ Unions (FNSEA) and Young Farmers (JA), have
converged on Paris to protest a bill designed to ease restrictions on the farming profession. Known as the
“Duploomb” bill, it is indeed named for Sen. Laurent Duplomb (Les Républicains).
As lawmakers in the National Assembly began debating the bill Monday, the farmers are demonstrating against
what they see as insufficient government support. The proposed legislation aims to simplify water storage,
pesticide access, and farm expansion.
FNSEA President Arnaud Rousseau said that thousands of farmers mobilized in the regions recently. He added that
the demonstration in front of the Palais-Bourbon will be controlled to prevent disruptions, following recent
incidents of degraded elected officials’ outsets. Rousseau warned that demonstrators feel the government has
not kept its word regarding the bill’s content.
The FNSEA considers the bill to be threatened by amendments from rebellious France (LFI) and environmentalists.
Julien Dive (LR), the bill’s rapporteur, and other supporters introduced a motion of rejection, backed by the
farmers.
Rousseau explained, “There are many other texts waiting but we fought to have a niche, we are not going to let
him pass.” A preliminary rejection motion would halt Assembly discussions and send the bill, in its senate
version, to a joint committee. This option would disadvantage the opposition, given the right-leaning senate
majority. The bill would then return to both chambers for a vote, without amendment possibilities unless the
government agrees.environmentalists deny obstruction, asserting they are fighting a text of ”Trumpian
inspiration,” according to MP Delphine batho.
What’s next
The French Assembly will continue to debate the merits of the “Duploomb” bill amid ongoing pressure from
farmers and opposition parties.
