Trade Safety Ltd: Celebrating 20 Years as Ireland’s Health & Safety Leader
Trade Safety Ltd has become a leader in health and safety consultancy, training, and equipment sales and hire. Established by Austin and Patricia Handy, the company recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with an open day at its headquarters in Tullamore.
Visitors saw a simulated rescue from a height, showcasing one of the many services Trade Safety offers. Austin Handy transitioned from a welder/fitter to a health and safety expert, completing a degree in environmental health and safety management. His experience allows him to identify the safety needs in modern workplaces.
He recalls early career challenges due to a lack of safety measures, which impacted his health. Now, Trade Safety emphasizes the importance of protective equipment, offering custom-fitted masks for optimal safety.
The company employs over 15 people and operates in three areas: Equipment Hire, Sales and Servicing; Consultancy; and Training. During the open day, Trade Safety focused on confined spaces, working at heights, and asbestos-related services.
General Manager Jimmy Duffy explained confined spaces require specific safety responses. Aidan Marrinan demonstrated the Skyhook, a rescue system for heights, allowing quick assistance in emergencies.
Trade Safety also provides a decontamination trailer for safe asbestos removal, ensuring workers can leave without contamination. The company collaborates with Rothoblaas for roof safety systems, addressing various safety needs for roof access and walking.
Austin Handy lists key challenges: rescuing individuals from heights and confined spaces. Trade Safety gives direct answers to these issues through their extensive stock of safety equipment.
Open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 5:30 pm and Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, the store offers masks, helmets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, gas detectors, and more. The rental of safety equipment is often more economical for contractors than purchasing.
