Trade Tensions Escalate: China Takes Canada to Task at WTO Over Tariffs
China Seeks WTO Intervention Over Canadian Tariffs on Electric Vehicles and Steel
China has requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to intervene in a dispute with Canada over tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum products, according to a report by Nikkei Asia.
Beijing’s move comes after Canada joined the United States and the European Union in imposing a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. In response, China announced plans to launch an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola imports.
China’s Ministry of Commerce stated that Canada’s actions have ignored WTO rules and violated its WTO obligations. ”Canada has proposed additional tariffs of 100% and 25% without justification, and we urge Canada to comply with WTO rules and immediately correct the wrongdoing,” the ministry said in a statement.
