The Colombian government and the ELN guerrilla group resumed peace talks in Havana, Cuba, on Thursday, january 9th, after a temporary suspension. The talks aim to secure a lasting peace agreement following decades of conflict.
Negotiations were paused in December after the ELN accused the government of not fulfilling agreements related to humanitarian gestures, including the release of individuals. The ELN also criticized military operations continuing during the truce.
Both sides have expressed a commitment to continuing the dialog. The Cuban government is acting as a guarantor of the process, along with Chile, Venezuela, and Norway.
Key issues on the agenda include land reform, political participation, and the implementation of measures to address the root causes of the conflict. The ELN has approximately 2,500 combatants.
Previous peace efforts with the ELN have failed. This round of talks, initiated by President Gustavo Petro, represents a renewed attempt to end the armed conflict.
