Tragedy Strikes: Coupang Warehouse Worker Dies a Week After Collapsing from Cardiac Arrest During 2-Day Training Camp
Tragic Incidents at Coupang Logistics Centers: A Pattern of Overwork and Neglect?
Recently, a series of tragic incidents have occurred at Coupang logistics centers, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several workers. On July 18, a day laborer died at Jeju’s Coupang logistics center, and another worker making late-night deliveries collapsed due to a brain hemorrhage.
Just a week later, another accident occurred at Coupang Siheung 2 Camp in Gyeonggi-do. A day laborer died while working late into the night, and a few days later, another worker collapsed. Coupang claimed that these incidents were unrelated to overwork, but the pattern of accidents raises concerns about the working conditions and treatment of employees.
The Demanding Work Environment at Coupang Logistics Centers
The automatic conveyor belt at Coupang logistics centers rotates quickly, leaving workers with little time to rest. The demanding work environment takes a toll on employees, both physically and mentally. Myeong-gyu Kim, a 49-year-old engineer with 22 years of experience, worked at Coupang Siheung 2 Camp on August 17 and 18. He collapsed on the second day, just two hours into his shift, and never regained consciousness.
Kim’s wife, who also worked at the logistics center, described the challenging work environment. “I said, ‘It’s hard to keep up.’ It’s hard to keep up, because it comes out so fast. I think I collapsed after less than 10 minutes.” She also revealed that even when her husband collapsed, she couldn’t stop working, as the conveyor belt continued to move, and she would be criticized if she didn’t keep up.
Coupang’s Response to the Incidents
Coupang claimed that the incidents were unrelated to overwork, citing the fact that the workers had chronic diseases and worked only one to three days, with daily working hours of one to two hours. However, this response raises more questions than answers. If the workers had chronic diseases, why were they not provided with adequate support and accommodations to ensure their safety and well-being?
The installation of ventilators in the workplace after the accident suggests that Coupang may have been aware of the hazardous working conditions. However, the company’s response to the incidents has been inadequate, and the lack of transparency and accountability is concerning.
A Call for Improved Working Conditions and Accountability
The incidents at Coupang logistics centers highlight the need for improved working conditions, better support for employees, and greater accountability from the company. As the demand for e-commerce and logistics services continues to grow, it is essential that companies prioritize the safety and well-being of their employees.
