Pit Bull Terrier Attack: Texas Couple Sentenced to 18 and 15 Years in Prison

A devastating incident in Texas has led to severe punishment for a dog-owning couple, Christian Moreno and Abilene Schneider, who were sentenced to 18 years and 15 years in prison, respectively. The couple’s vicious pit bull terrier attacked an elderly couple in their 80s, resulting in the death of 81-year-old Ramon Najera and injuring his wife, Juanita Najera.

The attack occurred on February 24 last year, near the couple’s home in San Antonio, Texas. The pit bull terrier had escaped from the couple’s property due to the lack of a proper fence. Firefighters who arrived at the scene used a dart to subdue the dog.

Juanita Najera, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), testified at the trial, stating, “I never imagined that my life would call me a widow in such a tragic way. These two people took a big part of my life, half of me.”

The judge emphasized the importance of responsible dog ownership, saying, “Owning a dog is a matter of responsibility. This includes not only looking after the dog, but also ensuring the safety of neighbors in the community.” Prosecutor Joe Gonzalez added, “This unfortunate tragedy could have been prevented if the pit bull terrier had been responsibly protected.”

The couple was also ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 each, totaling $10,000. Even if they are paroled, they will be banned from owning dogs in the future.
