Tragedy Strikes in Paradise: Marine Police Couple’s Icelandic Road Trip Ends in Devastation
Marine Police Couple Involved in Fatal Traffic Accident in Iceland
A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, 24th, when a marine police couple was involved in a serious traffic accident during a self-driving trip to Iceland, resulting in one fatality and one serious injury.
The deceased, a 34-year-old male police officer from the North Division of the Marine Police, lost his life in the accident. His 35-year-old female colleague, stationed at the Marine Police Training School, was seriously injured and hospitalized. Fortunately, her condition has stabilized, and she is able to communicate with others.
According to reports, the couple had rented a vehicle locally to visit a famous lighthouse. While driving on a gravel road north of the town of Skagaströnd in northern Iceland, the car suddenly lost control, rolled over, and fell into the Fossá River.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and rescued the trapped individuals. Unfortunately, the male driver died on the spot, while the female passenger was injured and sent to Akureyri Hospital for treatment. Local chief inspector Vilhalmur Stefansson stated that the speed limit on the road was 80 kilometers per hour, and there was no evidence of drunk driving or speeding. The weather was good, and there was no snow at the time, leading investigators to believe that the vehicle skidded on the gravel road, causing the accident.
The local police have expressed their gratitude to those who assisted in the rescue efforts and have offered their condolences to the families of the affected personnel. They will maintain close contact with them and provide all necessary assistance.
In response to media inquiries, the Immigration Department stated that it had received assistance and immediately learned about the situation through the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Embassy in Iceland. They provided appropriate advice and assistance based on the wishes of the person concerned and their family.
The Immigration Department reminds Hong Kong residents overseas who need assistance to call the 24-hour helpline at (852) 1868 or use the Internet data through the “Immigration Department Mobile Application” to submit an online help form.
