Shenzhen Bay Bridge Accident: Senior Customs Officer Dies After Car Falls into Sea
A tragic traffic accident occurred on the Shenzhen Bay Highway Bridge, resulting in the death of a senior customs officer. The officer, surnamed Huang, was driving his private car to work at the Shenzhen Bay Control Point when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed through the guardrail, falling into the sea.
The accident happened around 9:00 pm, and the Fire Department received a call at 9:16 pm. The diving team found the vehicle and the injured officer trapped underwater at 11:38 pm. Despite being rescued and sent to the hospital, the officer was confirmed dead at 1:30 am.
Road Information Display Damaged in Accident
At the scene of the accident, two tire marks were found on the express line, and a road information display screen near the shoulder of the slow line was damaged. The railing near the bridge also showed signs of damage, and car parts and debris were scattered on the road.
Chief Inspector Tsui Wing-lun of the Traffic Investigation and Support Unit stated that the display screen was not in operation at the time of the accident. The police are investigating the driver’s mental state, vehicle speed, and mechanical problems.
Experts Call for Removal of Road Obstacles
Li Yaopei, permanent honorary president of the Hong Kong Automobile Club of China, estimated that the car may have lifted its wheels after hitting an object on the highway or rushed off the road railing like a jumping platform. He urged the government to remove road obstacles as soon as possible, especially on expressways, to prevent similar accidents.
The Shenzhen Bay Highway Bridge, which opened to traffic in 2007, meets expressway standards, including a fence about 4 feet high. However, Li emphasized that the presence of obstacles on the road can still cause accidents.
Customs Commissioner Expresses Condolences
Commissioner of Customs Ho Peishan visited the hospital to inquire about the incident and confirmed that the deceased was a senior customs officer with 25 years of service. She expressed her deep condolences to the officer’s family and stated that the Customs was saddened by the incident.
