Tragedy Strikes Twice: Han Ki-beom’s Heart-Wrenching Loss of Father and Younger Brother to Genetic Disease
Former National Basketball Player Han Ki-beom Opens Up About His Family’s Struggle with Marfan Syndrome
Han Ki-beom, a former national basketball player, has shared his painful story of losing his father and younger brother to the genetic disease Marfan syndrome. In a recent appearance on the YouTube channel “Teacher Jeong Ho-geun’s Life Shrine,” Han Ki-beom confessed his family’s struggles with the rare genetic disorder.
A Family’s Struggle with Marfan Syndrome
Han Ki-beom revealed that his father and younger brother both passed away from Marfan syndrome in their 40s. His father died from a heart attack, while his younger brother died suddenly while working at a company. Han Ki-beom also shared that he had undergone surgery twice due to his poor heart condition.
“I survived the surgery, and that’s why I’m still alive today,” he said. “I had no symptoms, but when I went to the hospital and got tested, they said that I was 100% certain that I would die because of my heart. At first, I thought, ‘What are you talking about when there’s no pain? He’s an athlete.’ But when they told me I was going to die, they had the surgery right there and then, and I survived. I’m alive because of my younger brother.”
The Risks of Marfan Syndrome
Marfan syndrome is a rare genetic disease that affects the body’s connective tissue. Han Ki-beom’s son was born with a 50% chance of inheriting the disease, but fortunately, he has shown no external characteristics and is almost genetically unrelated.
Hope for a Full Recovery
When asked if he was hopeful about a full recovery, Han Ki-beom replied, “I’m almost hopeful. Only those who know about it in advance and receive treatment like me can dream of a full recovery.” He also shared that he currently has no pain or external symptoms.
Han Ki-beom’s story raises awareness about the importance of genetic testing and early treatment for Marfan syndrome. His courage in sharing his family’s struggles will undoubtedly inspire others to take action and seek medical attention if they suspect they may be at risk.
