Tragic Blaze: Olympic Hopeful Rebecca Cheptegei’s Life Cut Short in Brutal Ex-Boyfriend Attack
Ugandan Olympic Marathon Runner Rebecca Cheptegei Dies After Being Set on Fire by Ex-Boyfriend
Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, tragically lost her life after being doused with gasoline and set on fire by her ex-boyfriend. The incident occurred on August 1st, resulting in severe burns to over 80% of her body. Despite receiving emergency treatment, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries at the age of 33.
Cheptegei had returned to Kenya for training after participating in the Paris Olympics. She was attacked after returning home from church with her two daughters, one of whom witnessed the horrific incident. Local reports suggest that the tragedy was triggered by a land dispute between Cheptegei and her ex-partner. The police have launched an investigation into the matter.
This incident has drawn attention to the violent treatment of female athletes in Kenya. Since October 2021, Cheptegei is the third female athlete to be killed. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed his grief and called on the Kenyan government to seek justice for his daughter.
Dr. Owen Menach, the director of the hospital where Cheptegei was treated, confirmed that she died due to multiple organ failure. The Uganda Athletics Association condemned the atrocity and demanded justice for Cheptegei. They posted condolences on social media, stating, “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rebecca Cheptegei. She unfortunately passed away due to domestic violence. We strongly condemn such atrocities and demand justice be done. May her soul rest in peace.”
Cheptegei’s ex-boyfriend suffered minor burns in the attack and is in stable condition in intensive care. Local police reported that the two had an argument outside the house, and witnesses saw the man pour liquid on her and then set her on fire.
Cheptegei was originally from the border between Uganda and Kenya. She had purchased land and built a house in Transnzoya County, Kenya, to be closer to the local sports training center. She ranked 44th in the Paris Olympic Marathon and won gold at the 2022 World Cross Country and Mountain Running Championships in Thailand.
The issue of domestic violence in Kenya is becoming increasingly serious. According to a 2022 survey, 34% of women have suffered physical violence. Kenyan Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen stated, “This tragedy is another reminder that we must quickly address the issue of gender-based violence, which has begun to threaten the safety of elite athletes.”
