A stage technician died on Sunday, April 26, 2026, during the assembly of a concert stage for Colombian pop star Shakira in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The incident occurred as crews prepared for a free outdoor performance scheduled for May 2 on Copacabana Beach, part of Shakira’s ongoing world tour.

The victim, whose identity has not been publicly released, suffered fatal crushing injuries to his legs while working with a stage lifting system, according to a statement from the Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department (CBMERJ). Emergency responders freed the technician and rushed him to a hospital, where he later died.

Concert Organizers Respond

Bonus Track, the production company organizing the concert, confirmed the tragedy in a statement. “Unfortunately, the technician passed away in hospital,” the company said. The statement did not provide further details about the victim or the circumstances of the accident.

Witnesses on Copacabana Beach described a chaotic scene following the collapse of part of the stage structure. Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, a 51-year-old beachgoer, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) he saw people running toward the stage after hearing a loud noise. “Out of nowhere, we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was on the ground,” he said. “People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath. People rushed over to pull him out.”

Large-Scale Production Under Scrutiny

The concert, part of Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour,” has been in preparation for weeks, with crews assembling a massive stage on the iconic beach. The event was expected to draw hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world, continuing the singer’s tradition of high-profile free performances in Rio de Janeiro.

Shakira, a global superstar with a career spanning three decades, last performed in Rio in 2018 during her “El Dorado World Tour,” which also included a free show on Copacabana Beach. That event attracted an estimated 250,000 attendees, underscoring the logistical challenges of staging large-scale productions in open, public spaces.

Safety Concerns in Live Event Production

The fatal accident raises questions about safety protocols for temporary stage constructions, particularly in high-profile international tours. While no official investigation findings have been released, the incident mirrors past tragedies in the live entertainment industry, where workers have faced risks during complex setups.

The Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department has not yet provided additional details about the cause of the accident or whether any safety violations were involved. Brazilian authorities typically conduct thorough investigations into workplace fatalities, though results can take weeks or months to become public.

Shakira’s Tour Continues Amid Tragedy

As of Monday, April 27, no official statement from Shakira or her representatives regarding the incident had been released. The concert, scheduled for May 2, remains on the tour calendar, though organizers have not confirmed whether the show will proceed as planned or if additional safety measures will be implemented.

The “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour” began in 2023 and has broken records for Latin female artists, selling out stadiums across North America, Europe, and Latin America. The Rio de Janeiro show was intended as a celebratory stop, marking Shakira’s return to Brazil after an eight-year hiatus from large-scale performances in the country.

Fans and industry observers are now awaiting further updates from both the concert organizers and local authorities. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the human risks involved in producing large-scale live events, even as the entertainment industry continues to prioritize grand, immersive experiences for global audiences.
