[서울=뉴시스]Intern Reporter Eunjae Lee = A mother suffering from cancer who wanted to meet her son who went missing 9 years ago before she died passed away without fulfilling her last wish.
According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 28th (local time), Li Xuemei (李羅美·41), who had traveled all over the country for nine years to find her missing son, passed away on the 19th after battling cancer.
Ms. Li, who lived in a rural village in China’s Guangdong Province, suffered the tragedy of losing her then-five-year-old son in 2015. The son went missing while playing with a friend in a field near her home the day before the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.
After her husband and son went missing, Ms. Lee desperately searched for her son by putting up posters and banners all over the country. She also registered her DNA information with the police and saw families of missing children using DNA to find their children, which gave her hope.
Despite nine years of effort, the reunion that Ms. Lee so desperately wanted never happened. Two years ago, Ms. Lee was diagnosed with lung cancer, and to make matters worse, her parents’ health deteriorated, so she divorced her husband, feeling she could not bear the burden.
However, while taking care of her autistic daughter, her husband worked at a supermarket and earned 4,000 yuan (about 750,000 won), and he used 2,500 yuan (about 460,000 won) of it every month to pay for her special school tuition.
The husband said, “I will continue to search for my lost son, if only to fulfill my wife’s last wish.”
