Doctor’s Fatal Mistake: Patient Dies After Liver is Removed Instead of Spleen

A 70-year-old man in Alabama, USA, underwent emergency surgery, but the doctor made a critical mistake, removing the liver instead of the spleen, resulting in the patient’s death on the operating table.
William Bryan, 70, and his wife Beverly Bryan, were on vacation in Florida in August when William suddenly felt a severe pain on the left side of his body. They immediately went to a local hospital, where the doctor suspected a spleen issue and advised William to undergo surgery immediately to avoid serious complications.
On August 21, William underwent a laparoscopic splenectomy, but the doctor, Thomas Shaknovsky, mistakenly removed the liver, injuring a major artery and causing massive blood loss. William died on the operating table. The doctor’s mistake was not immediately discovered, and Shaknovsky labeled the removed liver as a spleen.
After William’s death, a pathologist at the hospital confirmed that the doctor had removed a liver instead of a spleen. It is alleged that Shaknovsky explained to Beverly that William’s spleen was severely diseased, four times larger than normal and metastasized to the other side of the body. However, in a typical human body, the liver is located in the upper right of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm, above the stomach, right kidney, and intestines; the spleen is located in the upper left of the abdominal cavity, connected to the stomach, and is significantly smaller than the liver.
Beverly has hired a lawyer to seek justice for her husband and hopes that the doctor will not treat other patients. “I don’t want anyone else to die in the hospital because of his incompetence.” According to the law firm, Dr. Shaknovsky had a similar medical dispute last year, mistakenly removing part of the patient’s pancreas instead of performing an adrenalectomy as planned.
