Violence Erupts in Chattogram, Bangladesh: Hindu Community Leader Denied Bail

Chittagong, Bangladesh – A lawyer was killed during clashes between police and followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu community leader. He was denied bail and sent to jail following a sedition charge by the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate court in Chattogram.

Police reported that Saiful Islam, an assistant public prosecutor in his early 30s, sustained critical injuries during the unrest and later died in the hospital.

The violence began when Das’s supporters protested after the court’s decision around noon. They disrupted a prison van carrying him, demanding his release. In response, police used sound grenades and batons to disperse the crowd, allowing the van to leave by 3:00 PM. Das appealed for calm from within the van.

Reports from Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, president of the Chittagong Lawyers’ Association, indicated that protesters dragged the lawyer from a hall room and attacked him. Eyewitness accounts affirm he was beaten by protesters and later pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital.

Dr. Nivedita Ghosh from the emergency department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital confirmed eight people were treated for injuries, with one fatality.

Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus condemned the lawyer’s murder and called for calm, urging people to avoid further violence. He ordered an investigation into the killing and urged law enforcement to increase security in the affected areas.

The Daily Star reported at least ten injuries, including several journalists, during the clashes. Protests also occurred in multiple districts, including Dhaka, Khulna, and Cox’s Bazar, with demonstrations demanding Das’s release.

Das’s arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged by a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accusing him and others of disrespecting the national flag during a rally. Local government adviser Asif Mahmud clarified that Das’s arrest was due to alleged sedition rather than his community leadership.

Das was also previously affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), which recently expelled him. Leaders from ISKCON Bangladesh did not comment on the situation.

Minorities, particularly Hindus, have faced increased attacks in Bangladesh, with reports indicating over 200 incidents in recent months. Hindus constitute about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population.
