Demand Exceeds Capacity on Route 272
Kerry County Councillors are formally requesting the National Transport authority and Bus Éireann to add an evening service between Tralee and Ballybunion. The push follows a motion presented by Sinn Féin Councillor Tom Barry at a recent Listowel Municipal District meeting, addressing consistent overcrowding on the 272 bus route.
Councillor Barry highlighted instances where passengers in Listowel were unable to board due to full capacity. While a second morning bus has reportedly resolved issues during peak commute times, the problem persists during evenings, particularly as winter approaches.
Student Concerns and Capacity Issues
The lack of sufficient student accommodation in the area is exacerbating the demand for public transportation. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council,Michael Foley, noted that students are increasingly worried about being left behind, leading some to walk from the Munster Technological University (MTU) campus to the Tralee bus station to secure a seat.
This demonstrates a significant need for increased capacity and reliability on the route, especially for students and commuters relying on the service for evening travel.
Potential Solutions Under Consideration
Councillor Aoife kennelly suggested that Bus Éireann explore the feasibility of adding an official bus stop at the MTU campus. This would directly address accessibility concerns and perhaps alleviate crowding at the Tralee bus station. The councillors’ collective action signals a commitment to improving public transportation options for residents and students in North Kerry.
