The Indonesian government is accelerating the crucial upgrade of a 61-kilometer stretch of the Trans-Jayapura-Wamena road in highland Papua province, aiming to revitalize the local economy and stabilize rising prices of essential goods. The project, slated for completion in 2025, addresses significant damage that has hampered transportation and contributed to economic challenges in the region.
Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs in Highland Papua
Governor of Highland Papua, John Tabo, recently discussed the urgent need for road improvements with President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta. The focus of their conversation centered on accelerating development in the newly autonomous regions of Papua, with the Trans-Jayapura-Wamena road taking center stage.
“The condition of the road between the Mamberamo River bridge and Elelim in Yalimo has been a major bottleneck,” Governor Tabo explained. “Severe damage has drastically slowed traffic flow, impacting the delivery of vital supplies and hindering economic growth.”
The deteriorated road conditions have notably affected the transport of staple foods and building materials, leading to inflated prices for residents. improving this key artery is therefore seen as a direct pathway to economic relief and improved living standards.
Economic Impact: Lower Prices & Increased Trade
The anticipated benefits of the road upgrade are substantial. Faster and more reliable transportation will directly address the high cost of goods currently plaguing Highland Papua.
“High inflation is, in part, a outcome of the difficulties in distributing basic necessities and heavy goods,” Governor Tabo stated. “A well-maintained road will streamline logistics, allowing us to control prices and ensure access to affordable goods for everyone.”
beyond price stabilization, the improved infrastructure is expected to stimulate local trade and economic activity. Easier access for four- and six-wheeled vehicles will facilitate the movement of goods to market, supporting local businesses and creating new economic opportunities. This is particularly crucial for Wamena, a key economic hub in the region.
Fully Funded by the State budget – A Commitment to Development
The Indonesian government is demonstrating its commitment to the development of highland Papua by fully funding the 61-kilometer road project through the State Budget (APBN). While the exact funding amount remains under the purview of the Ministry of Public Works, the dedication of national resources underscores the project’s importance.
this investment signifies a broader strategy to improve infrastructure across Papua, fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The Ministry of Public Works is leading the construction efforts, ensuring the project adheres to high standards of quality and sustainability.
The Trans-Jayapura-Wamena road upgrade is part of a larger wave of infrastructure development in Papua. Recent initiatives include:
