TravelAI, a Canadian AI travel company, has acquired the brand name and website of Sonder and relaunched Sonder.com as an AI-powered curation service for urban stays. According to TravelAI CEO John Lyotier, the new platform does not operate properties or take direct reservations, but instead directs users to third-party booking sites like Expedia, Vrbo, and Booking.com.
The acquisition follows the November 2025 collapse of the original Sonder, a boutique hotel and short-term rental operator that filed for bankruptcy and abruptly ceased operations. That shutdown occurred after Marriott International ended its partnership with the company, leaving employees jobless and guests forced to vacate properties mid-stay. While the original company reached a valuation of $2.2 billion in 2021, the current deal with TravelAI excludes those physical properties and the former operating business.
AI Curation and the Sonder Bar
The relaunched Sonder.com functions as a filtered list of boutique hotels, apartments, and homes. Lyotier told Business Insider that the company is leveraging the search equity and residual traffic of the Sonder domain to connect travelers with high-quality stays. To maintain this standard, TravelAI employs a system it calls the “Sonder Bar.”
TravelAI’s AI system curates listings based on photos, ratings, reviews, neighborhood characteristics, and specific features found in former Sonder properties. Lyotier stated that only about 5% of the 10 million properties available via partner sites meet the criteria for the Sonder Bar.
Revenue Model and Financial Targets
TravelAI earns revenue through commissions when customers click through the Sonder site to complete a booking on a partner platform. Lyotier declined to disclose the exact purchase price of the brand and website but described it as a “good value,” noting that the payback period would be measured in months rather than years.
The company has set a target of $100 million in bookings via Sonder.com within the first year.
Broader AI Travel Strategy
The acquisition of Sonder is the most high-profile brand purchase for TravelAI, which has previously acquired Smarttours.com, OwnerDirect.com, and Casai.com. Lyotier indicated that the Sonder relaunch serves as a gateway to draw attention to the company’s wider AI technology suite.
This technology includes two primary tools:
- Sonder Concierge: A beta tool that provides property recommendations based on learned individual traveler preferences.
Addressing Brand Reputation
TravelAI faces the challenge of distancing the new service from the bankruptcy of the previous entity. Lyotier told Business Insider that a significant number of monthly searchers for Sonder were unaware of the November 2025 shutdown and primarily remembered positive travel experiences.
“That’s a challenge we’ll have — making sure that the former customers understand that we are not that old Sonder.” — John Lyotier, CEO and founder of TravelAI
