Updated June 20, 2025
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, fired an opening-round 62 at the Travelers Championship, tying him for the lead with Austin Eckroat. Rory McIlroy is two strokes back after carding a 64.
Scheffler, fresh off a top-10 finish at last week’s U.S. Open, highlighted his round with an eagle on the par-5 13th. he also won the Travelers Championship last year. Eckroat also shot an 8-under-par 62 to grab a share of the lead. McIlroy, along with Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark, are all at 6-under.
McIlroy emphasized focusing on the quality of his play. “I just want to see some good golf and see some better shots,” McIlroy said. “I think if you concentrate on that… the result will take care of itself.”
Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion, withdrew from the tournament after 13 holes due to a shoulder injury. Spieth was 5-over for his round when he notified his playing partner, Luke Clanton, that he could not continue. He was then taken off the course in a cart.
“I’ve never withdrawn from an event ever, anywhere, at any level, so I didn’t really no what to do,” Spieth said. “It just became too much.” He added that the injury felt random, despite his efforts to take care of himself.
What’s next
The second round of the Travelers Championship promises more exciting golf as Scheffler and Eckroat look to maintain their lead, while McIlroy and others aim to close the gap. All eyes will be on whether Spieth can recover from his shoulder injury.
