Scottie Scheffler and Austin Eckroat ended the first round of the 2025 Travelers Championship tied for the lead at 8-under. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, surged ahead in the afternoon with a 62 at TPC River Highlands. Eckroat posted his career-low PGA tour round in the morning.
Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark are two strokes behind the leaders at 6-under. Jordan Spieth withdrew due to an upper back injury.
“I did a lot of good stuff,” Scheffler said. “I felt like the conditions were pretty challenging out there, especially late in the day. I was able to hole some nice putts as well.”
McIlroy and Bradley, who played together, combined for 13 birdies. McIlroy completed a bogey-free round.
Scheffler, paired with the U.S. Open champion, started strong with a birdie on the first hole and four more over the next eight. He made the turn at 5-under.
After a demanding week at Oakmont Country Club, scheffler continued his momentum on the back nine, carding four 3s in a five-hole stretch, including an eagle on the par-5. At 9-under, he had a sub-60 round in sight but settled for pars and a bogey to finish with a 62.
Scheffler is in position to win his second consecutive signature event and his fourth tournament in his last seven starts as he defends another PGA Tour title.
“It’s a 72-hole tournament, and the conditions I felt like were tougher this afternoon, so I was just going to try and go out and post a number and try and get myself in good position for the rest of the week,” Scheffler said. “I got hot pretty early in the round and got off to a nice start, and then I really kept the momentum through basically hole 15. And then I had one mess-up there on 17, but it was a pretty good day.”
What’s next
the second round of the Travelers Championship will continue with Scheffler and Eckroat looking to maintain their lead.
