Two-Way Star Becomes Frist As 1997 to Earn College Football’s Top Honor
New York, NY – In a historic moment for college football, Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter was awarded the 2024 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, becoming the first two-way player to receive the prestigious honor since Charles Woodson in 1997.
Hunter, a junior cornerback/wide receiver, dominated on both sides of the ball for Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes, racking up an astounding 1,443 snaps in 12 games. His versatility and impact on the game propelled him past fellow finalists Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward.”I never thought I’d be in this position,” Hunter said during his emotional acceptance speech. “Its crazy. Your belief will take you a long way. It’s actually crazy, man.Thank you, thank you, thank you. First, I want to thank my fiancée and my mother. they’ve been with me since the first time I had surgery my first year of college. They never took a step away from me. All the hard hours. All the hard days. All the times I didn’t want to wake up and even get on my phone, look at football, y’all stayed with me. I’m very thankful for y’all.”
Hunter’s remarkable season saw him earn first-team All-Big 12 honors as both a defensive back and a wide receiver, while also being named the conference’s 2024 Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the season with 15 passes defended (tied for fifth in the FBS), four interceptions, and a game-winning forced fumble.
On offense, Hunter was a force to be reckoned with, ranking fifth in the FBS with 92 receptions for 1,152 yards (sixth) and 14 touchdowns (second). He consistently delivered big plays, recording three games with 10 or more catches and seven outings with 100 or more receiving yards.
Hunter’s historic achievement comes as no surprise to those who have witnessed his exceptional talent and work ethic. He has already announced his intention to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, but not before potentially leading the Buffaloes to victory in the Alamo Bowl against BYU on December 28th.
The other Heisman finalists also enjoyed stellar seasons. Gabriel lead Oregon to an undefeated regular season and a Big Ten Championship, earning Big Ten Offensive Player and Quarterback of the Year honors. Ward, in his first year at Miami, transformed the Hurricanes’ offense, earning ACC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year accolades. Jeanty, a Mountain West standout, led the nation in all-purpose yards (2,613) and touchdowns (30), earning his second consecutive Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year award.
While each finalist showcased remarkable talent, Hunter’s two-way dominance and impact on the game solidified his place in college football history. His Heisman Trophy win marks a new era for the sport, proving that versatility and exceptional play on both sides of the ball can be rewarded at the highest level.
