Melbourne, Australia – After years of planning and negotiation, victoria is on the cusp of a historic shift: a treaty wiht its Aboriginal population. This isn’t a future promise, but a present reality, poised too reshape the relationship between the state and its First Peoples.
For many involved, the moment is surreal.As one key figure, Berg, admits, even while deeply involved in the agreement’s final details, a part of him doubted its realization. Now, he feels a profound duty to ensure the treaty translates into tangible improvements in Aboriginal lives. “It is now going to happen,” he emphasizes. “We have got to get to the work of making sure it is going to be effective and efficient as possible, that it is actually going to deliver on what it is supposed to do.”

While the treaty enjoys broad support,it’s not without its detractors. Figures like Toxch Warren Mundine have voiced strong opposition, calling for a referendum.Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has also criticized Gellung Warl, claiming it’s being imposed without proper consultation. However, it’s crucial to note that these voices, while influential, do not represent the diverse perspectives within Victoria’s Aboriginal community.

As Kevin Bell, a former Supreme Court judge who served on the Yoorrook Justice Commission, explains, Gellung warl operates within established processes, ensuring that increased consultation and participation by First Peoples are balanced with the protection of constitutional principles.
