Colin Trevorrow Reflects on ‘Flight of the Navigator’ Remake, plans UFO Thriller

Colin Trevorrow, known for his work on the “Jurassic World” franchise, including directing two films and executive producing the series and animated shows, is venturing into new territory. While he won’t be involved in next month’s “Jurassic World Rebirth,” Trevorrow has been busy with other projects, such as co-writing and producing the Amazon original movie “Deep Cover,” starring Bryce Dallas howard, Orlando bloom, and others.
Trevorrow also addressed the stalled remake of “Flight of the Navigator,” a project he was initially attached to direct in 2012. Although he is no longer directly involved,with Bryce Dallas Howard later tapped to direct a reimagining in 2021,Trevorrow said he and Howard often discussed the challenges of the remake while working on “Deep Cover.”
The original “Flight of the Navigator” centered on a 12-year-old boy abducted by aliens in 1978, only to reappear eight years later, unchanged and without his memories. NASA scientists then try to exploit his connection to a downed spacecraft. The boy ultimately escapes with the ship to reunite with his family.
“All the time.I saw every draft that she’s been working on as she’s been looking to crack it. If you were born at a certain moment, it’s one of those ones that you have a interest with. As a kid, the idea that all of your friends and family have aged while you’re still a kid, it’s just the absolute worst nightmare. So, yes, we’ve definitely connected on it… It’s pretty rare for directors to have other directors that they can communicate with and maybe even complain to sometimes, so she’s been splendid in that way.”
Looking ahead, Trevorrow is developing an Area 51 conspiracy thriller set in the 1980s. He described it as a “much more grounded and reality-based” take on UFOs, aiming for a newspaper-style approach akin to films like “Spotlight” and “All the President’s Men.” The film will focus on a journalist uncovering facts to reveal the truth.
