DR Congo on Edge: Verdict Looms in High-Stakes Trial of Alleged Coup Plotters

DR Congo on Edge: Verdict Looms in High-Stakes Trial of Alleged Coup Plotters

August 31, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

The trial following an attempted coup d’état in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues. Yesterday, August 27, 2024, the floor was given to the prosecution, who asked for the death penalty against the 50 defendants, including three Americans. They are all being prosecuted for “attack”, “terrorism”, “attempted murder”, “criminal conspiracy” and “murder”. The affair, we recall, dates back to May 19. That day, dozens of assailants, coming from who knows where, attacked the outgoing Home Minister of the Economy, Vital Kamerhe , who subsequently became President of the National Assembly, before investing in the Palais de la Nation property which houses the offices. President Félix Tshisekedi. The rest, we know. Because, after the coup failed, many of the attackers were arrested and they now answer for the facts they are accused of, before the judge. Certainly, the case is far from having its epilogue because after the prosecution’s inquiries, the lawyers’ pleas will follow before the court delivers its verdict.

It is up to Tshisekedi to know how to handle the stick and the carrot

But it is difficult to see how the defendants could escape the death penalty required against them. Especially considering the current context of the DRC facing a serious security crisis, and where President Félix Tshisekedi, suddenly becoming paranoid, accuses everyone of conspiring against his regime. No doubt he will want this trial to be a lesson to all and to help deter potential conspirators. It may not be wrong. Because, what can you expect after a failed coup d’état if you don’t see the law applied in all its rigour? All that remains is to hope that this ongoing trial and the convictions that are on the horizon will not contribute to weakening the united front that the Congo is calling for in order to face the common enemy which is the M23 which, in as well as sowing terror, gradually conquering areas on the ground. This means that, for the benefit of the Congolese people, it is up to Tshisekedi to know how to handle the stick and the carrot.
