William “Bill” Raines Battle III Passes Away at 82
William “Bill” Raines Battle III, a prominent figure in collegiate athletics, has died at the age of 82. He was a former director of athletics, athlete, football coach, and founder of the Collegiate Licensing Company.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Battle attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship. He played as a three-year starter at end for the Crimson Tide from 1960 to 1962 under coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. He contributed to the team’s first national championship in 1961 and earned a spot on Alabama’s All-Decade Team for the 1960s.
Battle graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in psychology in 1963 and earned his master’s in education from the University of Oklahoma in 1964. His coaching career began at OU as a graduate assistant under Bud Wilkinson. He also served as an assistant at the United States Military Academy and the University of Tennessee. He became head coach at Tennessee in 1970 and led the team to a 59-22-2 record over seven years, winning four out of five bowl games.
In 1981, he founded the Collegiate Licensing Company, serving as president and CEO until 2002. CLC was acquired by IMG in 2007.
Battle returned to Alabama as the director of athletics in 2013, serving for four years. Under his leadership, Alabama achieved three NCAA team national championships, ten SEC team championships, and produced numerous Academic All-Americans.
Following his role as AD, Battle worked as a special assistant to the UA president, supporting various initiatives.
He is inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. He received several awards, including an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from The University of Alabama in 2017.
Battle served on various boards, including the Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Foundation and the Crimson Tide Foundation.
