WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque has elaborated on the decision to extend Trick Williams’ time in NXT before his main roster call-up, stating that the extra developmental time was beneficial for Williams’ preparation.
According to Levesque, Williams had expressed frustration about remaining in NXT when he felt ready for the main roster, but the WWE executive explained that the additional time was necessary to ensure Williams was fully prepared for the spotlight. “I just said it to Trick the other night,” Levesque said in a sit-down conversation with Shawn Michaels, as reported by Variety. “He was being thankful for all the positioning and I said, ‘Look, I’m thankful that you’re ready to get there.’ I said, ‘So now look back on the frustration that you had of being in a time where you knew you were ready, in your mind. We were screwing you over by keeping you in developmental. … But we were getting you ready for this. We believed you weren’t quite ready yet and that you could benefit more, even if it was just slightly, from baking a little bit longer, and that time will pass.'”
Williams, who has been a member of the WWE SmackDown roster since January 2026, has since established his presence on the main roster, building to his United States Championship win against Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 42. Prior to his call-up, Williams spent years as one of NXT’s top performers, including holding the TNA World Championship for 140 days during his extended stay in developmental.
Levesque emphasized that WWE officials had plenty of faith in Williams even before his main roster debut, noting his accomplishments as a two-time WWE NXT Champion and TNA World Champion. The extra time in NXT allowed Williams to refine his skills and gain valuable experience in high-pressure situations, which Levesque believes contributed to his readiness for the main roster.
Williams himself has echoed this sentiment, describing the additional year in NXT as essential for his growth and career development. In interviews, he has referred to the experience as “God’s timing,” stating that the delay aligned perfectly with his personal and professional readiness. Williams specifically credited his TNA World Championship run during that extra year for putting him in “a whole different caliber” and boosting his confidence and charisma through reps in high-pressure environments.
The decision to extend Williams’ developmental run reflects WWE’s approach to talent development, where executives evaluate not just in-ring ability but also mental readiness and character development before promoting talent to the main roster. Levesque’s comments suggest that the company viewed the extra time as an investment in Williams’ long-term success rather than a delay in his progression.
As Williams continues to build his career on SmackDown, his United States Championship victory at WrestleMania 42 stands as an early milestone in what WWE officials believe will be a successful main roster career, bolstered by the foundational work he completed during his extended time in NXT.
