Triple Threat: Chinese Tennis Stars Make History with Unprecedented Semi-Final Sweep
Chinese Men’s Tennis Makes History with Three Players in Semi-Finals
Chinese men’s tennis has achieved a historic milestone, with three players entering the semi-finals of the tour on the same day.
On September 22, Zhang Zhizhen defeated Baena 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the ATP250 Hangzhou Open, reaching the semi-finals of the hard court tour for the first time. To celebrate his teammate Buyun Chaoket’s advancement to the semi-finals and entry into the world’s top 100, Zhang wrote “NO.4 TOP100” on the broadcast camera.
Earlier, Buyunchaoket defeated Kazakh veteran Kukushkin 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the tour for the first time in his career. His current world ranking is 96th, making him the fourth male player of the Chinese Tennis Association to break into the top 100 in the world after Zhang Zhizhen, Wu Yibing, and Shang Juncheng.
In the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Chengdu Open, 19-year-old Shang Juncheng defeated Bublik 6-4, 7-6(8), defeating his opponent again after the US Open and reaching the semi-finals of the tour for the third time this season.
This historic achievement marks the first time that three Chinese Tennis Association male players have entered the men’s singles semi-finals of the tour in the same week. Zhang Zhizhen and Buyun Chaoket will meet in the semi-finals of the Hangzhou Open, which will be the first “Chinese Derby” in the ATP Tour semi-finals.
