Tristan Boyer is an American player who thrived on clay courts in South America. He played in Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Uruguay, finishing the season strong.
Boyer was the only American in the singles main draw of the Campinas and Montevideo Challengers. He won both tournaments, tying the record for most match wins by an American in a single season with 44.
Boyer expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s definitely the best I’ve ever been playing. Ending the year with a title is crazy.” He quickly called his coach, Alejandro Fabbri, to celebrate his achievement.
After turning professional in 2022, Boyer rose to World No. 134. He is the first American to win three clay-court Challengers in one year, starting with his victory in Merida, Mexico in March.
Boyer credits his success on clay to his junior coach, Zibu Ncube, who imported authentic red clay from Europe. This unique training environment helped Boyer adapt and excel on the surface.
Boyer still trains in the U.S. but spends significant time in Argentina for preseason training. His coach, Fabbri, has trained various successful players, including Diego Schwartzman and Juan Pablo Ficovich.
During his training in Montevideo, Boyer warmed up with former soccer star Diego Forlan, who made his tennis debut that week.
Boyer humorously noted that Fabbri also coaches Ficovich, who was competing on hard courts in the U.S. while Boyer played on clay.
After winning in Montevideo, Boyer addressed the crowd in Spanish, showcasing the language skills he developed during his time in South America. His record for the year stands at 44 wins and 23 losses at the Challenger level.
Boyer emphasized the importance of staying healthy throughout the year, which allowed him to compete consistently after nearly missing the entire 2022 season due to injury. He expressed gratitude for his physical training team in Buenos Aires, crediting them for their support.
Boyer looks forward to building on his success next year. He aims to break into the Top 100 in rankings by focusing on improving his skills and making the right decisions for his progress.
Interesting Fact: Only Boyer and Frances Tiafoe have won three clay-court Challengers in the past decade.
