This is not your latest musical “Trolls” franchise installment. In fact, it’s disturbingly far from it…

Following the 2022 Norwegian film “Troll,” Netflix is all-in on its own troll-based franchise, with “Troll 2” set to arrive on the streamer later this year. The films blend the mythical lore of trolls into a classic monster movie packaging. The original “Troll” film was the most-watched non-English film ever to be released on the platform at the time. The core characters of Nora, Andreas, and Kristoffer are all back for the sequel, as is director Roar Uthaug.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “When a dangerous new troll is awakened, unleashing devastation across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris are thrust into their most perilous mission yet. To stop the creature’s ruthless rampage, they must enlist new allies and delve into the country’s ancient history, searching for answers. As the clock ticks and the troll’s path of destruction grows wider, our heroes face impossible odds in their fight to save their homeland from falling into darkness.”

The sequel is teased to also have a focus on UV light-based technology to combat the trolls, whose only real weakness is to sunlight. Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Sara Khorami star. “Troll 2” is directed by Uthaug from a script by Espen Aukan. Both are credited with the story.

Norway continues to have plenty of talked-about films hitting the international market: Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” which is his first film after being in the Oscars race with “Worst Person in the World,” is set for a 2025 release from Neon. The film stars Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, and Elle Fanning; the feature even has a meta nod to Netflix, with the central plot being about a famous director (Skarsgård) who seeks to apologize to his actress daughter (Reinsve) by casting her in an autobiographical drama about their family. The acclaimed film debuted at Cannes 2025 and was shot in Norway.

Other recent Norwegian releases have included “Sick of Myself,” “Bergman Island,” “22 July,” and “Out Stealing Horses,” among many more features.

“Troll 2” premieres on Netflix on Monday, December 1. Check out the film’s first teaser below.
