Trump Alaska Putin Victory Meeting
US Meeting with Putin in Alaska: A “Victory on a Plate” for Russia?
A planned meeting between US officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska is drawing sharp criticism, with one expert describing it as a pre-emptive “victory on a plate” for the Kremlin. The meeting, downplayed by the White House as a “feel-out” session,is raising concerns about potential concessions to Putin and the future of US-European relations.

According to an expert, the situation feels like “watching a slow motion train crash when you know days in advance it’s going to happen.” He expressed deep concern that the outcome of the meeting would be “at best nothing, at worst disastrous,” lamenting the apparent inability to avert a potentially negative outcome.
Rewarding Moscow?
the expert argues that simply holding the meeting is a win for Putin. “Russia will be fully aware that this is something that US presidents normally reward Moscow for – for good relations and working constructively towards solving problems,” he stated.
Circumventing the ICC Warrant
The fact that the meeting is taking place in Alaska, allowing Putin to avoid potential arrest under the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, is notably troubling. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023, accusing him of war crimes related to the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine. The expert sees this as “effectively, a workaround where an internationally wanted war criminal who can’t travel anywhere else so he has to go to Alaska in order not to arrive somewhere where he’s going to be arrested,” further solidifying the notion that Putin is being handed a victory before negotiations even begin.
Beyond Ukraine: Potential Demands
While Ukraine will likely be a central topic, the expert anticipates Putin will push for broader concessions. He suggests Putin might attempt to sway the US to reduce its support for Europe, questioning NATO’s expansion in Eastern Europe.
Concerns About Trump’s Susceptibility
There are fears that the US representatives might be susceptible to Russian disinformation.”We’ve seen previously that Trump is quite willing to swallow the lies [and] disinformation, the manipulation of history that we’ve seen from Putin,” the expert warned. This raises the possibility that the US could emerge from the meeting convinced that withdrawing support from Europe is the best course of action.
Missed Opportunities in Ukraine
The expert believes the time for optimism regarding Ukraine has long passed. He contends that opportunities to deter Russia’s initial invasion were missed, and that potential avenues for Ukraine to achieve a resolution have been blocked by the US and some of its European allies.
