Trump Announces Deal With Denmark to Bolster US Military Presence in Greenland
President Donald Trump announced a diplomatic agreement with Denmark to expand the United States military footprint in Greenland while leaving the Arctic territory under Danish sovereignty.
According to a social media statement from President Donald Trump, the emerging framework gives the United States permanent control over security and other necessary functions on the island, completely resolving previous U.S. concerns.
The announcement follows months of quiet negotiations between officials from the United States, Greenland, and Denmark. The diplomatic breakthrough eases tensions after months of friction, during which President Donald Trump repeatedly urged Denmark to sell the mineral-rich island and declined to rule out military acquisition.
Deal Terms and Security Provisions
Under the terms of the agreement, the three governments will formalize the pact next week during the United Nations General Assembly. However, the accord still requires formal parliamentary approval from both the Danish and Greenlandic governments before taking effect.
According to an anonymous State Department official cited by the Associated Press, the agreement specifically prohibits any non-NATO military bases in Greenland, restricts adversary investments, and explicitly bars Russia and China from establishing facilities on the territory.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the accord in a public statement, calling it a historic deal and a huge win for the United States. Rubio stated that Greenland will permanently remain part of North America’s strategic defense perimeter.
Sovereignty and Strategic Importance
Leaders from Denmark and Greenland emphasized that the arrangement respects local governance and territorial rights. The office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted in a statement that the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark while upholding the right to self-determination.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen added that the framework serves the interests of all three participating governments and secures Greenland’s standing in international cooperation.
The United States has maintained a military presence in Greenland since signing the Defense of Greenland Treaty with Denmark in 1951. The U.S. military currently operates the remote Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, which handles missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance for the United States and NATO.
