Trump Appoints Waltz UN Ambassador, Taps Rubio for Interim National Security
Trump Shakes Up Administration: Waltz to UN, Rubio Takes on Dual Role
CNN —
In a surprise move, President donald Trump announced Thursday the reassignment of Mike Waltz from his position as National Security Advisor to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Simultaneously, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume the responsibilities of Interim National Security Advisor, according to Trump.
“Mike Waltz has consistently prioritized the interests of our nation. I am confident he will continue to do so in his new role,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “Secretary of State Marco Rubio will concurrently serve as National Security Advisor, maintaining his strong leadership at the State Department.”
Waltz’s Departure Follows Reports of Instability
Earlier reports from CNN indicated that Waltz’s departure was anticipated, marking the first major personnel change since the president took office in January. Sources familiar with the situation suggested Waltz’s position had become tenuous, with his influence within the National Security Council waning.
A White House official, speaking to CNN, confirmed that Trump informed Waltz of his reassignment Thursday morning.
Waltz’s standing reportedly suffered after he inadvertently included a journalist in a messaging application group chat discussing sensitive military matters.
The outgoing National Security advisor expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving the administration. “I am deeply honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation,” Waltz posted on X.
Further Personnel Changes Anticipated
Sources suggest that additional changes within the national security team are expected, including the departure of Alex Wong,an attached national security advisor, although the timing remains unclear.
Rubio’s Expanding Portfolio
This is not the first instance of Rubio being asked to fill a sudden vacancy in the Trump administration. in February, following the dismissal of National Archivist Colleen Shogan, Trump appointed Rubio to that role.
That same month, Rubio was named Interim Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), an agency the administration had previously considered dismantling as part of spending reduction efforts. (Source: State Department)
Historically, Henry Kissinger held both the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor positions simultaneously under President Richard Nixon.
State Department Expresses Confidence in Rubio
state Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce voiced confidence in secretary of State Marco Rubio’s ability to manage both his diplomatic responsibilities and the interim National Security Advisor role.
“He would not have accepted the assignment if he did not believe he could handle it,” bruce stated, addressing concerns about Undersecretary of State Christopher Landau possibly assuming portions of Rubio’s portfolio.
bruce emphasized the collaborative nature of government, highlighting the strength of the State Department team.”When considering how Secretary Rubio will manage this, its akin to asking how President Trump leads the United States. There is a team in place; it’s not a solitary endeavor,” she explained.
“It’s about effective management and assigning individuals to the appropriate roles, as the president has just demonstrated. If anyone is capable of this, it is certainly Secretary Rubio, as I have come to know him,” Bruce added.
Bruce described Rubio as “highly engaged and energetic” with close ties to the president. “We have observed his frequent presence at the White House. His close working relationship with the president is evident,” she concluded.
