A protest in Malaysia,held on Friday,aimed to demonstrate support for Palestine adn assert the importance of “humanity and independence” within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Former parliamentarian Tian chua, representing the Secretariat of Solidarity with Palestine (SSP), articulated this goal during the event.
chua, a former Member of Parliament from Malaysia’s Parti Keadilan rakyat – the party led by Prime Minister Anwar ibrahim - emphasized the universal nature of solidarity, stating, “We must be (in) solidarity with the Palestinians in their journey. Doesn’t matter which race, religion, it’s about humanity.”
PAS Targets 10,000 Attendees, Criticizes US Policy
The Islamist party PAS reportedly aimed for 10,000 attendees at the Friday protest according to CNA. While acknowledging praise for former US President Donald Trump’s role in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, PAS argues the United States has provided substantial support to Israel.
A PAS spokesperson stated that an “exceptional amount of foreign military aid” has been directed to Israel following Trump’s return to office, citing a US$64 billion weapons sale to Israel approved by the trump administration.
Fragile Ceasefire and Ongoing Conflict
The Gaza ceasefire, a component of Trump’s 20-point plan to end the Gaza war, took effect on October 10th. However,the agreement remains precarious due to disagreements regarding the exchange of hostages and bodies,and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
The current conflict began on October 7,2023,when Hamas launched an attack on Israel,resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of around 250 hostages.
