Trump honors Fallen at Arlington on Memorial Day

Updated May 26, 2025

President Trump observed Memorial Day by visiting Arlington National Cemetery, continuing a tradition of honoring those who died in service. Accompanied by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Earlier, Trump used his Truth Social platform too wish a “happy Memorial Day to all,” while also criticizing political opponents and “USA-hating judges.”

Memorial Day is a solemn occasion to remember the more than 650,000 U.S. military personnel who have died in battle since the Revolutionary War, according to department of Veterans Affairs estimates. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, completed in 1932, symbolizes the unidentified remains of service members from World War I and later conflicts.

Earlier in May, Trump announced his intention to create new national holidays commemorating the end of World War I and World War II in Europe.

“All over the World, the Allies are celebrating the Victory we had in World war II. The only Country that doesn’t celebrate is the United States of America, and the Victory was only accomplished as of us,” Trump said.

He added, “I am hereby declaring a National Holiday in party of the Victories of World War I, where the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, and World War II, where the Victory date was May 8, 1945.”

The U.S. already observes Veterans Day on Nov. 11. Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day, occurred May 8, 1945, but the war continued in the Pacific until Japan’s surrender, announced Aug. 14, 1945.

What’s next

The president is expected to continue discussions regarding the proposed new holidays and their potential impact on the existing federal holiday schedule.
