Trump at G7: Trade & Middle East Conflicts
Trump Addresses Trade, Iran at Contentious G7 Summit
Calgary, Canada — president Trump arrived in Canada on Monday for the Group of Seven economic summit, facing immediate pressure over tariffs and global tensions. discussions are expected to be heated as the U.S. president confronts allied nations regarding recently imposed tariffs.
The summit occurs against a backdrop of escalating conflict between Israel and iran, now in its fourth day. While a draft G7 statement addressing the situation in Iran has been proposed, U.S. officials indicate that Trump does not intend to endorse it. The U.S. remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, officials said. The draft statement reportedly emphasizes monitoring Iran, protecting civilians, and reaffirming commitments to peace.
Trump’s schedule began with a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, a follow-up to their meeting last month at the White House.
Carney emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership at the G7, telling Trump, “The G7 is nothing without U.S. leadership, and your personal leadership, the leadership of the United States.”
trump responded, “We’ve developed a very good relationship, and we’re going to be talking about trade and many other things.”
The president also reiterated his stance on tariffs, stating alongside Carney, “I’m a tariff person. I’ve always been a tariff person.”
The remainder of the day includes meetings with other G7 leaders, the traditional “family photo,” and a cultural event.
Trump’s approach to allies and the implementation of tariffs have strained relationships, creating an undercurrent of unease during the summit.Previous suggestions by Trump regarding the potential acquisition of Canada and Greenland have further complicated relations with Canada.
During their earlier White House meeting, Carney addressed Trump’s remarks directly, asserting that Canada is not for sale.
Trump, referencing his background, told reporters, “As a real estate developer, you know, I’m a real estate developer at heart… when you look at that lovely formation when it’s together, I’m a very artistic person.”
